Try a worked example

Example

Choose SHA-256 and hash the three letters abc with no trailing newline. The digest is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad. With MD5, the same text gives 900150983cd24fb0d6963f7d28e17f72.

Keep in mind

Changing a single byte gives a completely different digest, so a trailing newline or Windows line endings change the result. To check a download, choose the file, pick the algorithm the publisher used and paste their checksum into the expected hash box.

About this tool

Produce a hash (digest) of text or of a whole file, then paste a published checksum to confirm they match. SHA hashes use the browser's built-in Web Crypto API; MD5, which Web Crypto does not offer, is computed by a small built-in implementation. Files are read on your device and never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 is a good default. MD5 and SHA-1 still catch accidental corruption, so use them when a download page publishes only those, but they are broken against deliberate tampering.
Can I reverse a hash?
No. Cryptographic hashes are one-way functions; you cannot recover the original text from the digest.
