Battery Capacity Converter (mAh ⇄ Wh)

Convert battery capacity between mAh and Wh using the nominal voltage, and see the equivalent in kWh.

About this tool

Battery Capacity Converter is a free, in-browser tool that converts battery capacity between milliamp-hours (mAh) and watt-hours (Wh) using the pack's nominal voltage. Pick a direction, enter the capacity and the nominal voltage, and it returns the converted value plus the equivalent in kilowatt-hours. All math is local; nothing is uploaded.

Capacity in mAh is a charge rating and only becomes energy once you include voltage. The conversions are Wh = mAh × V ⁄ 1000 and mAh = Wh × 1000 ⁄ V, where V is the nominal voltage. Dividing or multiplying by 1000 converts between milliamp-hours and amp-hours. Kilowatt-hours are simply watt-hours ⁄ 1000.

Use it to compare batteries rated in different units, check an airline's 100 Wh carry-on limit for a power bank, or convert a pack's mAh label into usable energy. A 3000 mAh cell at 3.7 V holds 11.1 Wh; the same 3000 mAh at 3.85 V holds slightly more, which is why voltage matters.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need the voltage to convert mAh to Wh?
Because mAh measures electric charge, not energy. Energy (Wh) is charge times voltage: Wh = mAh × V ⁄ 1000. Without the nominal voltage there is no way to know how much energy a given mAh rating actually stores.
What voltage should I enter?
The pack's nominal voltage — 3.7 V for a single lithium-ion cell, 3.2 V for LiFePO4, or the marked nominal for a multi-cell pack (for example 11.1 V for a 3S lithium pack). It is printed on most batteries near the capacity.
How do I check the 100 Wh flight limit?
Convert your power bank's mAh rating to Wh with its nominal voltage. Airlines cap carry-on lithium batteries at 100 Wh without approval; a 26800 mAh bank at 3.7 V is about 99 Wh, just under the limit.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your battery figures never leave your device and the tool works offline.
