Burn Rate & Cash Runway Calculator

Find your monthly net burn, cash runway in months and projected out-of-cash date from cash, expenses and revenue.

About this tool

Burn Rate & Cash Runway Calculator is a free, in-browser tool for founders and startups that shows how fast you are spending cash and how long it will last. Enter your cash balance, monthly operating expenses and any monthly revenue, and runway is projected instantly — all computed on your device with nothing uploaded.

Gross burn is your total monthly expenses. Net burn is expenses − revenue, the cash you actually lose each month. Cash runway = cash balance ÷ net burn, the number of months until you run out at the current pace. The tool projects an out-of-cash date by adding that many months from today. If revenue meets or exceeds expenses, net burn is zero or negative — you are cash-flow positive and there is no runway limit.

Use it to plan fundraising and hiring: a common rule is to raise before runway drops below six months. Lowering expenses or lifting revenue both extend the date — adjust the inputs to model each lever.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net burn?
Gross burn is everything you spend in a month. Net burn subtracts revenue: it is the actual cash leaving the bank. Runway is always based on net burn, since incoming revenue offsets some of the spend.
How is cash runway calculated?
Runway (in months) = current cash balance ÷ net monthly burn. With 500,000 in cash and a 40,000 net burn, runway is 12.5 months. The out-of-cash date adds that span to today's date.
What does 'cash-flow positive' mean here?
If monthly revenue is at least equal to expenses, net burn is zero or negative — you are not depleting cash — so there is no finite runway and the tool reports no out-of-cash limit instead of an infinite number.
Are my financials sent anywhere?
No. Cash, expenses and revenue are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so you can model sensitive startup numbers privately.
