Format book, website and journal citations in APA 7 or MLA 9 — reference entry plus in-text citation.
Manual entry only — nothing is fetched from the web, so your sources stay private.
About this tool
The Citation Generator is a free, in-browser formatter for APA 7 and MLA 9 citations. Fill in the author, title, date and source details for a book, website or journal article, and it builds both the reference-list (or works-cited) entry and the matching in-text citation, with correct punctuation and italics.
Unlike most citation sites, this one is manual-entry only: it fetches nothing from the web, so it works offline and your sources stay private. Copy buttons give you plain-text versions ready to paste; re-apply italics to the italicized parts in your word processor.
Fields you leave blank are omitted following each style's rules — for example, APA substitutes n.d. when there is no date.
Titles are kept exactly as you type them, so match your style's capitalization: APA 7 uses sentence case for titles (capitalize only the first word, the first word after a colon, and proper nouns), while MLA 9 uses title case (capitalize all major words). Adjust the title field when you switch styles.
Frequently asked questions
Which citation styles and source types are supported?
APA 7th edition and MLA 9th edition, each for books, websites and journal articles — the styles and sources behind the vast majority of student assignments.
Why can't I just paste a URL and auto-fill the fields?
This tool runs 100% in your browser with no network requests, so there is no metadata lookup — enter the details by hand and nothing about your research leaves your device.
What if my source has no author or no date?
Leave the field blank: the entry then starts with the title, in-text citations fall back to the title, and APA uses n.d. (no date) where the year would go.
Does copying keep the italics?
The copy buttons produce plain text for maximum compatibility, so re-italicize book, journal and website names in your document; the on-screen preview shows exactly which parts they are.
