The crop factor is 43.27 / sensor diagonal in millimetres, where 43.27 mm is the full-frame diagonal. The 35mm-equivalent focal length is focal × crop factor, so a 50 mm lens on a 1.6× Canon APS-C body frames like an ≈80 mm lens on full frame. The depth-of-field-equivalent aperture is f-number × crop factor, which is why a smaller sensor gives more apparent depth of field at the same nominal f-stop.

How is the crop factor calculated?
It is the full-frame diagonal (43.27 mm) divided by your sensor's diagonal. That gives about 1.5× for APS-C Nikon/Sony, 1.6× for Canon APS-C, 2.0× for Micro 4/3 and 2.7× for a 1-inch sensor.
What does 35mm-equivalent focal length mean?
It is focal length × crop factor — the full-frame focal length that would produce the same field of view. It describes framing only; the lens's actual focal length, and its optical behaviour, do not change.
Why show an equivalent aperture too?
Depth of field and the total light gathered depend on the physical aperture diameter relative to sensor size. Multiplying the f-number by the crop factor gives the full-frame aperture with equivalent depth of field, which is handy when comparing bokeh across formats.
