Choose your sensor, focal length and (for the NPF rule) aperture and horizontal pixel count, and it returns the longest shutter time you can use before stars start to streak — by both the quick 500 rule and the sharper, pixel-aware NPF rule. All math runs locally with nothing uploaded.

The 500 rule is maxSeconds = 500 / (focal length × crop factor), a fast field estimate. The NPF rule accounts for aperture and pixel density: pixel pitch = sensor width in mm × 1000 ÷ horizontal pixels (in microns), and the time is (35 × N + 30 × pixel pitch) / (focal length × crop factor). The NPF rule is stricter, so it yields shorter exposures that keep stars point-like on high-resolution sensors.

What is the difference between the 500 rule and the NPF rule?
The 500 rule only uses effective focal length: 500 ÷ (focal × crop factor). The NPF rule also factors in aperture and pixel pitch, so it adapts to modern high-resolution sensors and generally recommends a shorter, safer exposure.
Why is the NPF rule stricter?
Densely packed pixels resolve smaller amounts of star motion, so trailing shows up sooner than the simple 500 rule assumes. NPF's shorter time keeps stars point-like when you view images at 100% or make large prints.
How is pixel pitch worked out?
Pixel pitch in microns is the sensor width in millimetres × 1000 ÷ the number of horizontal pixels. A 36 mm-wide sensor with 6000 pixels across has a 6.0 µm pitch, which the NPF formula uses directly.
Is my camera data private?
