Stitches per unit is gauge stitches ÷ swatch size, and rows per unit is gauge rows ÷ swatch size. Cast-on stitches = round(target width × stitches per unit) and rows to work = round(target length × rows per unit). For example, a gauge of 20 stitches over 4 inches gives 5 stitches per inch, so a 40-inch width needs round(40 × 5) = 200 stitches.
Because gauge, not needle size, controls finished measurements, always swatch in your actual yarn and stitch pattern, block it, then measure. Round the stitch count to the repeat your pattern needs, and add edge or seam stitches separately.

How do I measure my gauge?

Why do my results differ from the pattern?
Finished size depends on your gauge, not the needle or hook size printed on the pattern. If your swatch has more stitches per inch than the pattern's gauge, you need more stitches for the same width — exactly what this tool corrects for.
Can I use centimeters?
Yes. Measure the swatch over 10 cm, enter 10 as the swatch size, set the unit to cm and give your target width and length in centimeters. The per-unit figures then read as stitches and rows per centimeter.
Should I round the stitch count?
Usually. Round to fit your stitch-pattern repeat or to an even number for ribbing, then add any selvage or seam stitches. The tool gives the nearest whole count; small adjustments keep the pattern symmetric.
