Bead Count & Bead-Weaving Calculator

Estimate how many beads a strand or project needs from bead size and length, with beads per inch, per centimeter and grams required.

Beads-per-gram figures are typical for glass seed beads and vary by material and finish — round up when ordering. Custom sizes report count only.

About this tool

Bead Count & Bead-Weaving Calculator is a free, in-browser tool for jewelry makers and bead weavers who need to know how many beads a strand, row or full project takes. Pick a seed-bead size or enter a custom bead diameter, set the finished length and the number of strands or rows, and it returns the total bead count along with beads per inch and per centimeter. Everything is computed locally — nothing is uploaded.

The method treats each bead as occupying its own diameter along the thread, so beads per inch = 25.4 ÷ bead width in millimeters and beads per centimeter = 10 ÷ bead width. The total is the length (converted to millimeters) divided by the bead size, multiplied by the number of strands, then rounded down to whole beads. For the seed-bead presets — 15/0 (1.5 mm), 11/0 (2.1 mm), 8/0 (3.0 mm), 6/0 (4.0 mm) and more — the tool also estimates grams needed using typical beads-per-gram figures, so you can buy the right size tube or hank.

Use the custom size for round beads, gemstones or bugles: an 8-inch strand of 6 mm rounds, for example, works out to about 33 beads. Bead weights vary by material and finish, so treat the gram figure as a close estimate and round up when ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How many beads fit in an inch?
It depends on the bead's width: beads per inch = 25.4 ÷ diameter in millimeters. A 2 mm bead gives about 12.7 per inch, while a 4 mm bead gives about 6.4. The tool shows both per-inch and per-centimeter figures for your chosen size.
How is the gram weight estimated?
For the seed-bead presets, the tool divides the total bead count by a typical beads-per-gram value for that size (for example about 110 for size 11/0). Custom diameters have no standard weight, so the gram tiles only appear for the presets.
What does the strands or rows field do?
It multiplies the per-strand count so you can total a multi-strand necklace or a loom or peyote panel in one step. Enter the number of identical strands or rows of the same length.
Does it work for round beads, not just seed beads?
Yes. Choose Custom size and type the bead diameter in millimeters — 4, 6, 8 mm and so on — to count rounds, gemstones or bugle beads. An 8-inch strand of 6 mm beads comes to about 33 beads.
