Cross-Stitch Fabric Size Calculator

Convert a stitch count and fabric count into finished design size and the fabric to cut, for Aida or over-2 linen.

About this tool

Cross-Stitch Fabric Size Calculator turns your pattern's stitch count and your fabric's count into the finished design size and the piece of fabric to cut. Enter the width and height in stitches, the fabric count, whether you stitch on Aida (one stitch per hole) or over two threads on linen or evenweave, and a margin — it shows the result in inches and centimeters.

Stitches per inch equal the fabric count for Aida, or the count ÷ 2 when stitching over two threads on evenweave. Design width = stitches wide ÷ stitches per inch, and the fabric to cut adds your margin to every side: cut = design + 2 × margin. On 14-count Aida a 140-stitch-wide design is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide.

Add a generous margin — 3 inches per side is common — so there is room for a hoop, a framing rebate and finishing. Higher counts pack more stitches per inch, shrinking the same design; a linen worked over two threads behaves like an Aida of half its count.

Frequently asked questions

What does the fabric count mean?
Count is the number of stitches per inch the fabric supports: 14-count Aida gives 14 stitches per inch, 18-count gives 18, and so on. A higher count produces a smaller, finer design from the same stitch count.
How does stitching over 2 on linen work?
On evenweave or linen you usually stitch over two fabric threads, so the effective stitches per inch is the count divided by two. A 28-count linen worked over two threads stitches at the same size as 14-count Aida.
How much margin should I add?
Three inches of extra fabric on each side is a common allowance, leaving room to mount in a hoop or frame and to finish the edges. Increase it for large frames or if you like extra handling room.
Is my pattern data uploaded?
No. The stitch counts, fabric count and margin are all processed in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server, so the calculator works offline.
