About this tool

The Kinetic Energy Calculator is a free, in-browser physics tool that applies KE = ½mv² and solves for whichever of the three quantities — energy, mass, or velocity — you leave blank. Velocity can be entered in metres per second, kilometres per hour, miles per hour, or feet per second, and it is converted to SI units before the calculation.

Kinetic energy is expressed in joules (J), mass in kilograms (kg), and the underlying velocity in metres per second (m/s). The constant ½ is exact; the only approximations are the unit-conversion factors (1 km/h = 1/3.6 m/s, 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s, 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s).

What units are used?
Energy is in joules (J), mass in kilograms (kg), and velocity in m/s internally. You may enter velocity in m/s, km/h, mph, or ft/s and it is converted before solving, so KE of 2 kg at 3 m/s is 9 J.
Which variable does it solve for?
Leave exactly one of energy, mass, or velocity blank. Blank energy gives ½mv², blank mass gives 2·KE/v², and blank velocity gives √(2·KE/m) shown back in your chosen velocity unit.
Why can mass or velocity not be zero when solved from?
Solving for mass divides by v², and a zero velocity would divide by zero; likewise a non-positive mass cannot be used to find velocity. The calculator flags these instead of returning infinity.
What is the momentum tile?
It shows linear momentum p = mv in kg·m/s using the resolved mass and velocity, a handy companion quantity since both share the same inputs.
