About this tool

The Roof Rainwater Runoff Calculator estimates how much water a roof or any catchment surface will shed during a rain event. It is the number you need to size a rain barrel or cistern, plan gutters and downspouts, or gauge how much water a rainwater-harvesting system can capture from a single storm.

The calculation follows the rational method: runoff volume = catchment area × rainfall depth × runoff coefficient. In US units, gallons = area(ft²) × rainfall(in) × 0.623377 × coefficient, where 0.623377 converts one inch of rain over one square foot (144 in³) into US gallons. In metric, one millimeter of rain over one square meter equals exactly one liter, so liters = area(m²) × rainfall(mm) × coefficient. The runoff coefficient defaults to 0.90, typical of hard, low-absorption roofs such as metal or asphalt shingle.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the sloped roof area or the footprint?
Use the horizontal footprint (plan) area. Rain falls vertically, so the volume of water intercepted depends on the flat area the roof covers, not the larger sloped surface. A steeper roof over the same footprint collects the same water.
What is the runoff coefficient?
It is the fraction of rain that actually runs off rather than being absorbed, evaporated, or splashed away. Hard roofs (metal, asphalt) run about 0.90–0.95; the calculator defaults to 0.90. Lower it for porous or vegetated surfaces.
How is the gallon figure derived?
One inch of rain over one square foot is 144 cubic inches, which is 144/231 ≈ 0.6234 US gallons. Multiplying area in square feet by rainfall in inches by 0.6234 and the runoff coefficient gives the runoff in US gallons.
Why does 1 mm over 1 m² equal 1 liter?
One square meter is 1,000,000 mm² and one millimeter of depth over it is 1,000,000 mm³, which is exactly one liter. That clean identity makes the metric side of rainwater math straightforward: area(m²) × rain(mm) = liters.
