About this tool

Video to GIF is a free, in-browser converter that turns a chosen slice of a video clip into an animated GIF. You load a video file, set the start and end time, the frame rate and the output width, and the tool steps through the clip frame by frame, drawing each frame to a canvas and encoding it into a looping GIF with the gifenc quantizer.

Everything happens locally using your browser's own video decoder and a small JavaScript GIF encoder — your file is never uploaded and never leaves your device, so it works offline and is safe for private footage. Because a GIF only holds 256 colours per frame, it is best for short, small clips rather than long high-resolution video.

To protect memory the tool caps a single GIF at 150 frames; if your range and frame rate would exceed that, it trims the range and tells you. Lower the frame rate or width for a smaller file, or raise them for smoother motion.

Frequently asked questions

Which video formats can I use?
Any format your browser can play natively — commonly MP4 (H.264), WebM and Ogg. Decoding relies on the browser's built-in video support, so exotic or hardware-only codecs may fail to load; if that happens you'll see a clear message.
Is the conversion lossless?
No. A GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so the video is re-encoded and colour-quantized; the result is an approximation of the original with visible dithering on gradients. It is a re-encode, not a lossless copy.
Why is there a 150-frame limit?
GIF frames are held in memory during encoding, so very long clips at high frame rates can exhaust the tab. The cap keeps the tool responsive; if you hit it, the time range is trimmed to fit 150 frames and a note is shown.
Does my video get uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser with local decoding and encoding — your file never leaves your device, nothing is sent to a server, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
