About this tool

The Creative Writing Prompt Generator gives you story starters to break through a blank page. It has two modes. The curated bank holds dozens of hand-written, full-sentence prompts sorted by genre — fantasy, sci-fi, horror, romance, mystery, literary, and kids — each a complete premise you can run with ("The new house has one more room at night than it does during the day."). Pick a genre, or leave it on Any to draw from every bank at once.

The generated mode builds infinite variety from a mad-lib grammar: "Write about a {character} who {inciting incident} and must {goal} before {deadline}." Each slot is filled from its own bank — a retired thief, a lighthouse keeper; discovers a hidden door, inherits a house no one else can see; reach the coast before the storm, the last train leaves at dawn — so you can keep generating fresh combinations until one sparks. Duplicate prompts inside a batch are removed.

Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded. Choose a genre and mode, ask for 1 to 10 prompts, and press Generate. Use them as strict prompts or loose springboards — the goal is simply to get words moving. Copy the batch to drop into your notes or a writing app.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two modes?
Curated mode draws complete, hand-written prompts from a bank sorted by genre. Generated mode assembles new prompts from a mad-lib template — a character, an inciting incident, a goal, and a deadline — giving effectively unlimited variety at the cost of the polish of the curated lines.
Can I filter by genre?
Yes, in curated mode you can pick fantasy, sci-fi, horror, romance, mystery, literary, or kids, or choose Any to pull from all genres. Generated mode produces genre-neutral premises that work as a starting point for most kinds of stories.
How many prompts can I get at once?
Between 1 and 10 per batch. Duplicates within a batch are filtered out, so each Generate press gives you a distinct set. Press Generate again for a completely new batch whenever you want more.
Do I have to follow the prompt exactly?
Not at all. Prompts are springboards — change the setting, swap the character, or keep only the mood. The point is to get past the blank page, so treat any generated line as loosely or strictly as helps you start writing.
