The Dance Floor Size Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that sizes a rental dance floor for a wedding or event. Give it your guest count and the share who will dance at once, and it returns the square footage, the number of rental panels, a recommended square dimension, and the actual paneled area you would install. It is built around the event-industry standard of 4.5 sq ft per dancing person — roughly 9 sq ft for a dancing couple. All math runs locally in your browser.
Not everyone dances at the same time, so the tool assumes 30–50% of guests are on the floor at once (40% by default, adjustable). Dancers = guests × dancing fraction, and floor area = dancers × 4.5 sq ft. Rental floors come as modular panels — most commonly 3 × 3 ft (9 sq ft), with 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 options here — so panels = ceil(area ÷ panel area), and the paneled area is those whole panels laid out. The recommended square dimension rounds the side up to a whole-panel multiple, giving tidy sizes like 12 × 12, 15 × 15, or 21 × 21 ft that a rental company can actually build.
As a worked example, 100 guests with 40% dancing gives 40 dancers × 4.5 = 180 sq ft; with 3 × 3 panels that is ceil(180 ÷ 9) = 20 panels and a recommended 15 × 15 ft (225 sq ft) floor. As a sanity check, 50 guests land near 12 × 12 ft and 200 guests near 21 × 21 ft. If your crowd loves to dance, bump the percentage toward 50% so the floor never feels cramped.
