Phantom or vampire load is the power drawn by chargers, set-top boxes, game consoles, TVs and networking gear that are never truly off. Annual energy is the sum of standby watts × hours per day × quantity × 365 ÷ 1000, and the cost is that energy times your electricity rate. What counts as a phantom load?
Any device drawing power while it appears off or is only in standby: TVs, set-top and cable boxes, game consoles in instant-on mode, phone and laptop chargers left plugged in, microwaves and coffee makers with clocks, printers, sound bars, and always-on routers and modems.
How is the yearly cost calculated?
For each row the tool takes standby watts × hours per day × quantity to get watt-hours a day, sums every device, multiplies by 365 and divides by 1000 for kWh per year, then multiplies by your electricity rate. Ten devices at 5 W running 24 hours, for instance, is about 438 kWh a year.
Where do the standby wattages come from?
The presets are typical measured standby figures (a router ~7 W, a game console ~10 W, a phone charger ~0.26 W), but real values vary by model and mode. For an accurate result, measure your own devices with a plug-in power meter and enter those watts.
How can I cut phantom load?
Unplug rarely used chargers, group entertainment gear on a switchable power strip, turn off instant-on modes on consoles and TVs, and choose ENERGY STAR devices with low standby draw. The tool lets you delete rows to see the savings from removing specific culprits.
