About this tool

EV Home Charging Cost Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that shows what it really costs to charge an electric car at home. It reports the energy drawn from the wall for a charge, the cost of that charge, the cost per mile and an estimated monthly cost.

The energy pulled from the outlet is battery kWh × (endPct − startPct) ÷ 100 ÷ chargingEfficiency, because AC-to-battery losses mean you pay for more kWh than land in the pack; charge cost is that energy × your electricity rate. Cost per mile is rate ÷ (milesPerKWh × efficiency), and monthly cost is your monthly miles × cost per mile. Distinct from an EV charging time calculator, this tool answers the money question, not the how-long question.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide by charging efficiency?
Charging is not lossless: some energy is lost as heat in the cable, onboard charger and battery. At about 85–92% efficiency you draw roughly 8–18% more kWh from the wall than reach the battery, and you pay for all of it — so the cost uses the wall figure.
What should I enter for the charge window?
The start and end state of charge you normally top up between — for example 20% to 80%, the everyday range many owners use to protect battery life. The tool charges only for that difference, not a full 0–100% fill.
How do I find miles per kWh?
It is your car's driving efficiency: miles driven divided by kWh used, shown on the dashboard or window sticker (often 3–4 mi/kWh). If your car reports Wh per mile, divide 1000 by that number (250 Wh/mi = 4 mi/kWh).
Are these costs exact?
They are estimates based on the rate and efficiency you enter, with no live utility pricing. Time-of-use rates, temperature and driving style all shift real costs, so treat the output as a close planning figure. Everything runs in your browser.
