About this tool

Map Scale & Distance Calculator is a free, in-browser tool for working with any representative fraction scale, such as 1:25,000 on a topographic map or 1:48 on a scale model. It has four modes: convert a map measurement to real ground distance, convert a real distance to its map length, find the scale from a known map-and-ground pair, and size a scale model or drawing. Every calculation runs locally; nothing is uploaded.

A scale of 1:N means one unit on the map equals N units on the ground. Real distance is map distance × N, so 4 cm on a 1:25,000 map is 0.04 m × 25,000 = 1,000 m, or 1 km. Going the other way, map distance is real distance ÷ N. To find an unknown scale, the tool divides the real distance by the map distance to get N and reports it as 1:N. The model mode divides a full-size dimension by the scale to give the size to build or draw. All inputs are normalized to meters first, so you can mix millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet and miles freely.

Use it to plan hiking routes from a paper map, to build architectural or railway models at the correct proportion, or to reverse-engineer the scale of an unlabeled map or plan. Because it works purely from the ratio you supply, there is no live map data involved — it is exact arithmetic you can trust for both metric and imperial units.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a map distance to real distance?
Multiply the map distance by the scale denominator. On a 1:25,000 map, 4 cm on paper equals 4 cm × 25,000 = 100,000 cm = 1,000 m = 1 km on the ground. The Map → real distance mode does this for you in several units.
What does a scale like 1:25000 mean?
It is a ratio: one unit of any length on the map represents 25,000 of the same units in reality. It has no units of its own, so 1 cm = 25,000 cm = 250 m, and 1 inch = 25,000 inches ≈ 0.39 mile.
Can I use this for scale models or drawings?
Yes. The model mode divides a real-world dimension by the scale to give the size to build or draw — a 12 m wall at 1:100 becomes 12 cm. Use Map → real distance to go the other way, from a model measurement back to full size.
How do I find a map's scale if it is not printed?
Measure a distance on the map and find the matching real distance (from a grid, a known landmark or GPS). The Find scale mode divides the real distance by the map distance and reports the ratio as 1:N.
