About this tool

The Poker Outs & Pot Odds Calculator tells you whether a call is mathematically profitable in Texas Hold'em. Enter how many outs you have, which street you are on, the pot size and the bet you must call, and it compares your chance of hitting to the price you are getting. It runs entirely in your browser.

After the flop there are 47 unseen cards and two cards still to come, so the chance of hitting is 1 − ((47 − outs)/47)·((46 − outs)/46). After the turn there are 46 unseen cards and one to come, so the chance is outs/46. The familiar rule of 2 and 4 (outs × 4 with two cards to come, outs × 2 with one) is shown alongside as a quick approximation. Pot odds are call / (pot + call) × 100, and the call is +EV whenever your hit percentage exceeds your pot-odds percentage.

A nine-out flush draw after the flop hits about 35%, so calling is profitable whenever it costs you less than 35% of the final pot. The break-even outs figure tells you the minimum outs that would justify the call at the current price.

Frequently asked questions

How is the hit probability calculated?
From the flop with two cards to come: 1 − ((47 − outs)/47)·((46 − outs)/46), the complement of missing both times. From the turn with one card to come it is simply outs/46. These are the exact odds, not the rule-of-thumb estimate.
What is the rule of 2 and 4?
A fast mental shortcut: multiply your outs by 4 with two cards to come, or by 2 with one card to come, to estimate your hit percentage. The tool shows it next to the exact figure so you can see how close it is.
What are pot odds and when is a call +EV?
Pot odds are the price of the call relative to the final pot: call / (pot + call) × 100. If your chance of hitting is higher than that percentage, the call is +EV (profitable in the long run); if lower, it is −EV.
What does 'break-even outs' mean?
It is the fewest outs whose hit chance still meets or beats your current pot odds. If you have at least that many outs the call is justified by price; with fewer, you would be calling too expensively.
