About this tool

Rainwater Harvesting Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that estimates how much water a roof can collect from a rainfall event. Enter the roof's catchment area (directly or as length × width footprint), the rainfall in inches and a collection efficiency, and it returns the gallons captured plus the barrels needed to store them. Rainfall is entered by you — there is no weather lookup — and nothing is uploaded.

The formula is gallons = rainfall (inches) × roof area (ft²) × 0.623 × efficiency, where 0.623 is the gallons of water that fall on one square foot per inch of rain. Efficiency (0.85 by default) accounts for splashing, first-flush diversion and gutter losses. Barrels needed = ceil(gallons ÷ barrel size), using 55 gallons per barrel by default and rounding up. Liters are gallons × 3.78541.

Use it to size a rain-barrel or cistern system: multiply a typical storm's rainfall by your roof footprint to see the yield, then decide how many barrels or what tank capacity captures it. Even a modest roof collects hundreds of gallons from an inch of rain.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does a roof collect?
About 0.623 gallons per square foot for every inch of rain, before losses. The tool multiplies that by your roof area, the rainfall and the collection efficiency. A 1,000 ft² roof in a 1-inch rain at 85% efficiency yields roughly 530 gallons.
What roof area should I use?
Use the footprint — the flat, horizontal area the roof covers (length × width), not the sloped surface. Rain falls vertically, so a steeper roof of the same footprint catches the same volume. Measure the outline of the building plus overhangs.
What does collection efficiency mean?
It is the fraction of rain that actually reaches your barrel after splashing, evaporation, gutter overflow and any first-flush diverter. Around 0.75–0.90 is typical; the 0.85 default is a reasonable middle estimate for a clean gutter system.
Does this use a weather service?
No. You enter the rainfall yourself and every figure is computed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and no network or weather API is used, so the tool works entirely offline.
