Tree Spacing / Trees-Per-Acre Calculator

Find trees per acre from row and in-row spacing, or how many trees fit a plot of a given length and width.

About this tool

Tree Spacing Calculator is a free, in-browser tool for planning an orchard, vineyard row or windbreak. Enter the distance between rows and the distance between trees within a row and it returns the planting density in trees per acre, or switch to plot mode to see how many trees fit a rectangle you measure. Nothing is uploaded — every figure is computed on your device as you type.

Trees per acre is 43,560 ÷ (row spacing × in-row spacing), because an acre is 43,560 square feet and each tree occupies a rectangle of those two dimensions. In plot mode the tool counts whole rows and whole trees: rows = floor(width ÷ row spacing), trees per row = floor(length ÷ in-row spacing), and total = rows × trees per row, so partial rows are never counted. Spacing presets fill in typical values for dwarf, semi-dwarf and standard fruit trees.

Use the per-acre figure to compare layouts and order stock for a large block, and use plot mode to lay out a specific garden bed or backyard row. Wider spacing lowers the count but gives each mature tree more light, root room and airflow.

Frequently asked questions

How is trees per acre calculated?
An acre is 43,560 square feet. Each tree occupies a rectangle of row spacing × in-row spacing, so the density is 43,560 divided by that product. At 20 ft × 20 ft that is 43,560 ÷ 400 = 108.9 trees per acre.
What do the dwarf, semi-dwarf and standard presets use?
The presets fill in typical fruit-tree spacings: dwarf 12 ft rows × 8 ft in-row, semi-dwarf 18 ft × 15 ft, and standard 30 ft × 25 ft. Editing either spacing field switches the preset back to Custom so your own numbers are used.
Why does plot mode round the rows and trees down?
A partial row or a tree that would overhang the plot edge cannot actually be planted, so plot mode takes the floor of width ÷ row spacing and length ÷ in-row spacing. The result is the number of whole trees that physically fit.
Is anything I enter sent to a server?
No. Spacings, plot dimensions and the resulting counts are all computed in your browser and never uploaded, so the calculator works offline.
