Gear Ratio, RPM & Speed Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that ties together engine speed, road speed, transmission gear ratio, axle (final drive) ratio and tire diameter. The relationship is RPM = (MPH × gear ratio × axle ratio × 336.13) ÷ tire diameter, where tire diameter is the overall rolling diameter in inches. The constant 336.13 is 1056 ÷ π, which converts miles per hour and inches into revolutions per minute. Each of the other unknowns is found by rearranging that single equation, so the four inputs fully determine the fifth.

Use it to predict cruising RPM after an axle-ratio or tire-size change, to pick a final drive for a target highway RPM, or to check a speedometer reading against engine RPM. In top gear the transmission ratio is usually 1.0 (or the listed overdrive ratio).

Frequently asked questions

What does the constant 336.13 represent?
It is 1056 ÷ π. One mile per hour is 1056 inches per minute, and dividing by π × tire diameter converts that into wheel revolutions per minute; multiplying by the gear and axle ratios gives engine RPM.
Which tire diameter should I enter?
The overall rolling diameter of the tire in inches, not the rim size. You can get it from the Tire Size Comparison Calculator, a tire spec sheet, or by measuring the mounted tire's height.
What gear ratio do I use for highway cruising?
The ratio of the gear you cruise in — often 1.00 for a direct top gear, or the overdrive ratio (for example 0.65–0.85) for the tallest gear. Multiply by the axle ratio to get the total reduction.
