About this tool

The Wheel HP ↔ Crank HP Calculator converts between the power measured at the wheels on a chassis dyno and the power produced at the crankshaft (flywheel). Manufacturers quote crank horsepower, but a rolling-road dyno can only read what reaches the tires — the difference is drivetrain loss, the power absorbed by the transmission, differential, driveshafts, and rotating mass.

The relationship is Crank HP = Wheel HP / (1 − loss) and, going the other way, Wheel HP = Crank HP × (1 − loss). The tool estimates the loss fraction from your drivetrain: front-wheel drive around 10%, rear-wheel drive around 15%, and all-wheel drive around 22%, with roughly an extra 4% added for an automatic transmission because of torque-converter and pump losses. You can override all of this with a custom loss percentage if you know your specific figure. The same math applies equally to torque.

What loss percentages does the tool assume?
As rough presets: FWD ≈ 10%, RWD ≈ 15%, and AWD ≈ 22%, plus about +4% for an automatic transmission versus a manual. These are common rules of thumb — enter a custom loss percentage if you have a better figure for your specific drivetrain.
Why is crank horsepower higher than wheel horsepower?
The engine makes power at the crankshaft, but the transmission, driveshaft, differential, axles, and their rotating mass all consume some of it before it reaches the tires. So wheel HP is always lower than crank HP; the gap is the drivetrain loss.
Is drivetrain loss really a fixed percentage?
No. Modelling loss as a flat percentage is a simplification. Actual loss has both a fixed friction component and a load-dependent part, and it changes with gear, driveline design, temperature, and tire. The presets are estimates, not exact conversions.
Does this work for torque too?
Yes. Because torque and horsepower are proportional at any given RPM, the same (1 − loss) factor converts wheel torque to crank torque and back. Just enter the torque value in place of horsepower.
