Percentile value uses the inclusive interpolation method (PERCENTILE.INC); the rank uses the count-below plus half-equal method.

About this tool

The Percentile Calculator turns a list of numbers into percentiles two ways: it can find the value at a percentile you choose, or the percentile rank of a value you enter. Paste your data separated by commas, spaces or newlines; it sorts them and computes everything locally in your browser.

To find a value it uses the inclusive linear-interpolation method (the same as spreadsheet PERCENTILE.INC): rank = (p/100)·(n − 1), then value = sorted[⌊rank⌋] + frac·(sorted[⌊rank⌋+1] − sorted[⌊rank⌋]), where frac is the fractional part of rank. To find a rank it uses the "below plus half-equal" definition: percentile rank = (count of values below v + 0.5·count of values equal to v) / n × 100.

Alongside the requested result it always reports the quartiles Q1 (25th), median (50th) and Q3 (75th) using the same interpolation, plus the minimum and maximum. Finding a percentile value needs at least two data points so interpolation is defined; a single value is enough to look up a rank.

Frequently asked questions

Which percentile method is used?
The inclusive method, matching Excel/Google Sheets PERCENTILE.INC: rank = (p/100)(n − 1) with linear interpolation between the two nearest sorted values. For 1…10 at p = 25 this gives 3.25.
How is the percentile rank of a value computed?
Using the count-below-plus-half-equal rule: (number of values less than v + half the number equal to v) ÷ n × 100. Averaging the ties keeps the rank symmetric for repeated values.
How are the quartiles defined?
Q1, the median and Q3 are simply the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles computed with the same PERCENTILE.INC interpolation, so they stay consistent with any custom percentile you request.
How do I enter the data?
Type or paste the numbers separated by commas, spaces, tabs or new lines — order doesn't matter, the tool sorts them for you and ignores anything that isn't a number.
