Crosswind & Headwind Component Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that breaks a reported wind into the two components that matter on the runway: the crosswind (across the centreline) and the head- or tailwind (along it). Enter the wind direction, wind speed in knots and the runway heading in degrees; the split is calculated instantly on your device.
It takes the angle between the wind and the runway, normalises it to ±180°, and converts to radians (degrees × π ÷ 180) before applying trigonometry. Crosswind = wind speed × sin(angle) and headwind = wind speed × cos(angle); a positive result along the runway is a headwind, a negative one a tailwind. The tool reports the crosswind magnitude with the side it comes from (left or right), the head- or tailwind value, and the angle off the runway centreline.
Use it to check whether a wind is within your and the aircraft's crosswind limits before takeoff or landing, and to pick the most favourable runway. How are the components calculated?
The tool finds the angle between the wind direction and the runway heading, converts it to radians, and computes crosswind = speed × sin(angle) and headwind = speed × cos(angle). A negative along-runway value means a tailwind, and the crosswind's sign tells you which side it blows from.
What do I enter for the runway heading?
The runway's magnetic heading in degrees — for example, Runway 30 is about 300°. Enter the wind direction in the same reference (usually magnetic from ATIS or the METAR) so the angle between them is correct.
How is the crosswind side determined?
By the signed angle between wind and runway. If the wind lies clockwise of the runway heading the crosswind comes from the right; if anticlockwise, from the left. The tool labels the magnitude 'from left' or 'from right' accordingly.
Can I trust this for go/no-go decisions?
Use it as a quick estimate for training and planning, not for real-world navigation. Compare the result with your aircraft's demonstrated crosswind limit and current official reports, and apply your own judgement and margins before flying.
