About this tool

The FFMI Calculator turns your weight, height and body-fat percentage into a Fat-Free Mass Index — a way to gauge how much muscle you carry relative to your height, independent of body fat. Everything is computed live in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

First your lean body mass is found as LBM = weight × (1 − body-fat% ÷ 100). FFMI is then LBM in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (FFMI = LBM ÷ height²). Because taller people tend to score lower, a height-normalized FFMI is also shown as FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in metres), which adjusts every result to a 1.8 m reference height. The classification band (below average, average, above average, excellent, superior, or suspiciously high) is read from the normalized value.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal FFMI?
Roughly 18–20 is average for men, with 20–22 above average and 22–25 hard-earned but achievable naturally. Values below 18 are below average. Women typically sit a few points lower.
Why show a normalized FFMI?
Plain FFMI is biased by height, so taller people score lower. Normalized FFMI adds 6.1 × (1.8 − height in metres) to standardize everyone to a 1.8 m (about 5 ft 11 in) reference for fairer comparison.
What does 'suspiciously high' mean?
A normalized FFMI above about 25–26 is near the ceiling most drug-free trainees reach, so scores over 26 are flagged as unusually high. It is a statistical note, not a diagnosis or accusation.
Do I need an accurate body-fat number?
Yes — FFMI depends heavily on body-fat %. A rough guess still gives a ballpark, but a measured figure (calipers, DEXA, or a good estimate) makes the result far more reliable.
