About this tool

The Standing Desk Height Calculator is a free, in-browser tool that turns your body height into ergonomic desk, seat, and monitor heights for both standing and seated work. It uses well-established anthropometric ratios so your elbows stay near 90°, your wrists stay neutral, and the top of your screen sits at or just below eye level — the neutral-posture setup ergonomists recommend to reduce shoulder, wrist, and neck strain. Everything is computed locally in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded.

From your total height H the tool derives: standing desk (elbow) height ≈ 0.6 × H, seated desk height ≈ 0.375 × H, and seat height ≈ 0.25 × H. Standing eye height ≈ 0.936 × H tells you where the top of a monitor should be (place it about 2–3 in / 5–8 cm below that so your gaze falls on the upper third of the screen), and seated eye height ≈ seat height + 0.4 × H does the same when sitting. An optional shoe-heel value is added to the standing measurements so a heel that lifts you off the floor is accounted for. Choose centimeters or inches for all results.

As a worked example, a person 170 cm tall gets a standing desk height of about 102 cm, a seated desk height of about 63.8 cm, a seat height of about 42.5 cm, and a standing eye height of about 159 cm — so the monitor top should be roughly 154–156 cm off the floor. Treat these as starting points: fine-tune until your forearms are parallel to the floor, wrists straight, and you can read the screen without tilting your head, and alternate between sitting and standing through the day.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should my standing desk be?
A good starting point is about 0.6 × your body height, which puts your elbows near 90° with forearms parallel to the floor. For a 170 cm person that is roughly 102 cm. Adjust so your wrists stay straight while typing.
Where should the top of my monitor be?
At or slightly below eye level. Standing eye height is about 0.936 × your height; place the top of the screen about 2–3 in (5–8 cm) below that so your gaze rests on the upper third of the display and your neck stays neutral.
What seated desk and seat heights does it use?
Seated desk height is about 0.375 × your height and seat (chair) height about 0.25 × your height. Keep thighs roughly parallel to the floor and feet flat or on a footrest, with elbows at about 90° at the desk edge.
Does the shoe-heel input matter?
Yes. A heel raises you off the floor, so its height is added to the standing desk and standing eye-height results. Enter your typical work-shoe heel to get a standing height that matches how you actually stand at the desk.
