About this tool

The Rowing Split & Power Calculator converts an indoor-rowing effort into the numbers a Concept2 monitor shows: your /500m split, power in watts and calories per hour. Enter a distance and time, or a target /500m split directly. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Your split is time ÷ (distance ÷ 500), the seconds it takes to cover 500 m. Pace per metre is the split ÷ 500. Power follows the Concept2 formula watts = 2.80 ÷ pace-per-metre³, and calories per hour use their approximation cal/hr = watts × 4 × 0.8604 + 300. Enter a split with an optional distance and the tool also estimates the total time to row it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a /500m split?
It is how long it takes to row 500 metres at your current pace, shown as minutes:seconds. A 2:00 split means every 500 m takes two minutes — lower splits mean you are rowing faster and harder.
How is wattage worked out?
Concept2's formula is watts = 2.80 ÷ (seconds-per-metre)³, where seconds per metre is your split divided by 500. Small drops in split raise watts sharply because power scales with the cube of pace.
Why is there a fixed 300 in the calorie formula?
Concept2 uses cal/hr = watts × 4 × 0.8604 + 300. The +300 approximates the energy your body burns even at very low power, so the machine never shows an unrealistically tiny calorie rate.
Do the calories account for my bodyweight?
No. It is the Concept2 machine estimate, based only on power output, so heavier or lighter rowers actually burn somewhat differently. This is general fitness information, not medical advice.
