Cycling FTP & Power Zones Calculator

Calculate cycling FTP from a 20-minute, 8-minute or ramp test and get the 7 Coggan power zones in watts plus your W/kg.

About this tool

The Cycling FTP Calculator estimates your Functional Threshold Power from a test effort and splits it into the seven Coggan training zones. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.

FTP is your test power times a factor for the protocol: a 20-minute test uses 0.95, an 8-minute test 0.90, and a ramp test 0.75 — or enter your FTP directly (factor 1). From that FTP the seven zones are set as percentage bands: Z1 active recovery under 55%, Z2 endurance 56–75%, Z3 tempo 76–90%, Z4 threshold 91–105%, Z5 VO2 max 106–120%, Z6 anaerobic 121–150% and Z7 neuromuscular above 150%. Your power-to-weight ratio is FTP ÷ bodyweight in kilograms (pounds are converted by dividing by 2.2046).

Use the zone table to steer interval and endurance work, and track W/kg as a fitness marker over time. Testing protocols and zone models vary between coaches, so treat these as a solid standard rather than the only answer. This is general fitness information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is FTP calculated from a test?
FTP is your average test power times a factor: 0.95 for a 20-minute test, 0.90 for 8 minutes, or 0.75 for a ramp test. So a 250 W 20-minute effort gives 250 × 0.95 = 237.5 W.
What are the seven power zones?
The Coggan zones as a share of FTP: Z1 under 55%, Z2 56–75%, Z3 76–90%, Z4 91–105%, Z5 106–120%, Z6 121–150% and Z7 above 150%, covering recovery through to a maximal sprint.
What is W/kg and why does it matter?
Watts per kilogram is FTP divided by your bodyweight in kg. It reflects how much power you carry per unit of mass and is a strong predictor of climbing and racing performance.
Which test should I use?
The 20-minute test is the most common; the 8-minute and ramp tests are shorter alternatives with their own factors. Use the same protocol each time so your FTP trend stays comparable.
