Steps to Miles & Calories Calculator

Convert step count to distance in miles and km and estimate calories burned, using your height or stride length and pace.

General fitness information only, not medical advice.

About this tool

The Steps to Miles Calculator turns a step count into distance in both miles and kilometres and estimates the calories burned. Everything is computed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Your stride length is estimated from height: about 0.413 × height for walking and 0.415 × height for running, in the same unit you enter. You can also type a measured stride directly. Distance is steps × stride, then converted to miles and kilometres (100,000 cm per km, or 63,360 inches per mile). Calories use your weight where given — roughly distance in km × weight in kg × 0.65 for walking or × 1.03 for running — falling back to about 0.04 kcal per step if no weight is entered.

Use it to see how far a daily step goal like 10,000 steps really takes you, or to sanity-check a pedometer. Stride and calorie figures are estimates that vary by terrain and gait. This is general fitness information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is stride length estimated?
From your height: about 0.413 × height for walking and 0.415 × height for running. For a more exact result, measure your own stride and enter it directly instead.
How is distance from steps found?
Distance is steps × stride length. That total is then converted using 63,360 inches per mile (imperial) or 100,000 cm per kilometre (metric) to show both miles and km.
How are calories estimated?
With your weight, it uses roughly distance-km × weight-kg × 0.65 (walking) or × 1.03 (running). Without a weight it falls back to about 0.04 kcal per step. Both are approximations.
How far is 10,000 steps?
For most people it is around 4–5 miles (about 7–8 km), but it depends on height and stride. Enter your details for a figure tailored to you.
